The Ustasha Massacre of Serbs at Prkos, 1941

The Ustasha Massacre of Prkos Serbs, 1941

Prkos Village is located on the northern part of the territory of the district of Vrginmost on the right bank of the Kupe River between Lasinje and Banski Kovacevci. Until the end of the World was it seemed a whole with Banski Kovacevci but afterwards received the official name Pros Lasinjski, that was originally went by the name of Prkos. Settlements occupy three parallel branches which will go down from the forest Bukova, the head is towards the river Kupa. On the west branch are Zaeoci Bižic and Korac on high Bastajici, and eastern BUCAN, while the hamlet Dobrici Alazima southeast towards the neighboring village of Crna Draga.

According to the ethnic composition of all the inhabitants were Serb farmers. On the eve of war, in 1941, the village had 106 households with about 750 inhabitants, according to the post-war census in 1948 there were 73 households with 235 residents. During NOR about 480 inhabitants disappeared from the village. Due to overpopulation and harsh economic conditions, Many Prkos villagers were forced to leave the village and seek jobs abroad. At the beginning of the Second World War 106 residents were out of the country, of which 85 were in the U.S., and 21 in France, while inside our country, in various locations, about 45 people found employment. About 30 Prkoš people were mobilized into the Austrian army and thus found themselves on many fronts, and about 20 refused to fight on the side of the Aust-D-Hungary and remained in the countryside.

Due to the influence of various political currents, up to the Second World War Prkoš-ites were divided into several groups, but the majority of the population was on the side of the independent democratic party Svetozar Pribicevic. Supporters of the party founded by the 1935 Rural Society Wheel which brought in advanced villagers, who accepted the ideological teaching of the KPJ. The work of this society were characterized by Mile Stopic, tailor, as president, Joco ‘astajic, secretary, Mile Bucan, Marko Blžic, Mile R. Bižic and Ilija Katic. An active youngster organization was led by Dragan Korac. In addition to cultural prosvjetog of this organization was involved, through another of Sjenicak, and the collection of aid for Spanish soldiers. However, despite the fact that there were supporters of KP, there was the formation of village party cell KPH.

Due to the capitulation of the former Yugoslav army, nine conscripts from Prkos were in prisoners in Germany, while others were able to return home, but without weapons. The people of the village of Prkos were full of uncertainty and fear following the news of Ustasha atrocities and the slaughter at Veljun. However, as in other towns and in Prkos, some people who had been in touch with Lasinja municipality representatives assessed that there would be no displacement and extermination of Serbs. But despite that people became more cautious and started to arrange for their own self-defense.

The first actions of the local savage Ustasha were focused on the capture and killing of prominent people, regardless of political affiliation. On 5 May 1941 they managed to catch Dušana Bastajica, of Zagreb, while other people could take shelter once they learned of their intentions.

In these difficult days in Prkos appeared an old revolutionary named Pavle Bastajic Pajo. He gathered the people together and spoke to them about the difficulties lying ahead and the need for a common organization. He gave advice, but they did not take it. Ustasha arrested him in Topusom, took him to the Jasenovac concentration camp and killed him. In July 1941 began a well organized operation. Influenced by Party members, in the home of Milica Bucan of Sjenicak held jointly with about 60 people, they heard of the directive of the Party for the preparation of the armed struggle, the new situation, the collection of arms and forming a village guard. Elected and committee to work on these tasks, and who have entered: Rade Bastajic Lipi, Milic Bastajic, Mile Bucan – Sergeant, Cedomir Bucan Cedo, Milic Bucan and Marko Bižic after this meeting was held several meetings in villages.

At the next joint meeting, held in the second half of September 1941 in the house of Mile Bastajica, blacksmith, there was a more specific conclusions. They formed a line of organized guards and patrols, who would warn people in time to take sheltera should they find Ustasha invading the town. They resolved to form and people’s committee. The Sentry line included: Miladin B. Bastajic, Milic B. Bastajic, Nikola B. Bastajic, Mile N. Bastajic, Peter Bižic, Cedomir Bucan, Jovo Bucan Mile – sergeant, platoon commander, Nikola Bucan Mile Bucan Cirko, Radomir Katic, Dragan Korac, Radovan Korac, Mile V. Korac and Miladin Korac. The National Committee were elected: Rade Bastajic Lipi, chairman, Mark Bižic, Radovan Bižic, Jovan R. Bucan and Mile Stopic.

Monument to fallen soldiers and ŽFT

Text on a monument, “Patriotic people of Prkos village rose to the call of the Communist Party of Yugoslavia in the fight against loathsome occupiers and domestic traitors to freedom and independence of their homeland. The offensive of the Ustasha villains of Kordun, surrounded, on 21 December 1941, Prkos village and captured unarmed old men, women and children, and with them a part of the people of village Dugom, and violently slaughtered them in the Brezje and Lasinje woods, while others were burned alive in Dugo Selo. In further fighting Prkos gave 117 fighters, and 23 fighters heroically gave their lives . In this ossuary are contained the remains of 478 victims of fascist terror from the village of Prkos, along with the bones of thousands of victims of Dugo Selo and the family of P. Nikolic and D. Vujcic from Lasinje. This monument was erected by the people of Prkos in honor of the victims of fascism and the fallen comrades, who shed their blood for the freedom of their homeland. “We fell because we love freedom. “(The back of the monument has 9 boards where they carved 883 names).

Since Prkos was on the right bank of the river Kupa, between Croatian villages, party cadres were organized and to connect it with the left bank of the Kupa, and the District Committee of the Communist Party of Karlovac. Connection to the Kupa was organized by Nicholas Bastajica and his son Budimir, who had their own boats. This connection, in the region of Dunarica, with Šišljevicem and Karlovac, was worked continuously during the NOB. Over Prkos Nikola Vidovic, commander of the 4th Battalion, organized the attack on the seventh of December 1941 on the Ustasha-gendarmerie foothold in Pisarovina. Preparations and reconnaissance in Pisarovina was performed by Dusan Stanojevic, a fighter from the battalion, Nicholas Vidovic, Milan Prišut, Radovan Roknic and Mile Bucan sergeant from Prkos. In this successful action participated about 50 Prkoš residents working on transport, security, demolition, TT poles, etc., and participating in the armed attack were: Nikola Bastajic Mile Bucan Cedo Bucan Ilija Bucan, Jovo Bucan, Nikola Bucan, Radovan Korac and Miladin Korac. The particular commitment of the members of NO really stood out, especially Rade Bastajica Lipog, who during the night had brought boats from Dunarica, about 10 miles to the crossing and returned them back, without being discovered by the Ustasha on the left bank of the Kupa.

To prevent the crossing of partisans over the Kupa and the spread of the NOB into Croatian villages with Ustasha government, after our actions in Pisarovina, 7 December 1941, Home Guard units targeted the right bank of the Kupa, and by the beginning of the Ustasha offensive 21st December, they and Italian forces endeavored to make this part of the territory clean of partisans. During this time the unit fourth Battalion, under the direction of Nicholas Vidovic, were on the line War Memorial – Skakavac, where occupied Ustasha Home Guard strongholds and release Utinja and soldiers – Station.

Just then, on 21 December 1941, when partisan units had achieved considerable success and spread their free territory, began the second (the first was August 13) Ustasha offensive on the Fourth Battalion territory. On that day, 21 December, as the survivors of Prkošcani say, appeared a sad week with snow and closed sky, as if nature mourns this gloomy day Ustasha carried out the slaughter of innocent women, children and elderly. Already in the early morning hours, Ustasha surrounded the and all the women, children and the elderly, about 478 souls, were locked in a room at the elementary school. The only available way out was to Bansko Kovacevac, but there the Ustasha were waiting. About 130 men and 7 women managed to slip away. Croat members of the NOP were powerless to help their Prkos neighbors. On the same day, 21 December, Ustasha took one group at a time cto Lasinje and imprisoned them in the French magazine, them took them into the Brezje Woods where all were slaughtered. On this day Ustashe burnt homes and looted their cattle, farm tools and machinery, foodstuffs, things of value, and even better residential houses, barns and haystacks, taking all with themm. Prkos remains bleak – desolation.

The only one who helped the people of Prkos to escape Ustasha atrocities was a police sergeant from Lasinje, Pero Nikolic, a Croat born in Herzegovina. When he learned about the Ustasha plan he sent a letter by was of a gypsy, Curko Parapaticu, to Nikola Bižic, a prominent farmer and former municipal representative. With the letter he wanted to communicate to the Serbian people of Prkos to withdraw in time to Kordun, because of the threaten from the Ustasha. But the letter did not make it to Bižic, because of the carelessness of Parapatica. When meeting with the two Ustasha, Toma and Joža Sudar of Novo Selo, he was questioned about where he was going, he said he was delivering a letter from the same Sergeant Nikolic to Prkos. The letter was taken. Nikolic had to go into action with the Ustasha, but for safety’s sake, because he did not know whether the letter arrived in Prkos, he fired several rifle shots, so that Prkošc residents would know he was fleeing. Thus he also managed to rescue about 130 men. Nikolic was found the same day in Prkos, was arrested along with his wife and two children and were killed with the Serbian people of Prkos in the Brezje Woods.

Based on data collected from the living Lasinje locals, who were eyewitnesses of the Ustasha crimes, some of whom were forced by the Ustasha to take part in the receiving of people, the digging of holes and the burying of corpses, Marko Mrvac, retired colonel wrote: “Sela Lasinja, Crna Draga, Novo Selo, Dresno and Desni Sredicko Štefanki, were inhabited by a Croatian population, but always before the war lived in harmony and brotherhood with neighboring Serbian villages, although religiously divided. All customs and choirs, both religious and others were held together, they visited each other and married each other.

With the creation of the NDH in these five village in the sixth month of 1941 began with the census and are seeking the search for volunteers for the Ustashe. So at the end of 1941 in these villages set Ustasha crew, led by the local Ustasha.

At the same time in June and July 1941 a census was carried outin Dugo Selo and Prkos, to collect data and 50 dinars per person for a baptism. The same did not occur because the Lasinjski priest, a native of Slovenia, who came to Lasinja in 1926, refused to perform the baptism. He was a supporter of the National Liberation Movement and the Ustasha called him a partisan.

In the fall of 1941 a delegation of 12 Ustashe residents of Pisarovina and Lasinja who were in the Fourth Unit, 1st Batallion KPO, headed by Milan Martinovic, went to Zagreb to seek from Pavelic reinforcements to counteract the presence of partisans in Prkos and Dugo Selo and the threat of Serbs, seeking also that the these villages be destroyed.

Mrvac Janko Marko, 1926, native of Dresno Sredicko, retired Colonel.

After these interventions, on December 20, 1941 about two thousand of the Ustasha “LUBURIC Battalion” came to Lasinja, marking the beginning of the December offensive on Kordun. At nine o’clock on the same day three helmeted Lasinja Ustasha in a motorcycle with a sidecar came into town. Due to the snow they slipped and landed in a ditch, after which one of them said, “Mother Serbia, you will pay for this!” Around 11 am a larger groups of Ustasha trucks and motorcycles began arriving in Lasinja. They immediately raised the guard and closed all roads and access roads, not letting anyone leave Lasinje.

On December 21st, at about four o’clock in the morning, the Ustasha left Lasinje and moved to Prkos and Dugo Selo. At the same time, 15 villagers from Lasinje were forced under guard tp dig a hole the size of 30 x 4 x 4 meters in the Brezje woods. By noon they had dug a pit and were taken back to Lasinja under guard. The weather was cloudy and foggy with visibility only to about 200 meters. By afternoon the fog lifted and the sky brightened in Prkos and Dugo Selo. By one in the afternoon columns of men, women and children, without baggage, arranged in columns, rows 4-6 and followed up on both sides of the Ustasha with bayoneted guns, which they held in their hands. A woman gave birth to a child while in this column. The column had been and a wagon with one a woman who has given birth to a child on the move. Upon reaching Lasinja placed into a gun magazine.

Around 4 pm the same day, they were taken from the magazine and placed in the barn of miller Jose Katalinica, which had barred windows. Sometime around 21 hours they started bringing people who were bound together to the excavated pit. Above the pit waiting for the Ustasha in uniforms with knives and wooden mallets, with which they were hit in the head or had their throats slit. Being tied together they fell into the pit, some of whom were still alive. The slaughter went on until 1am in the morning. After the atrocities were committed the bloody Ustasha returned to Lasinja where the residents had to provide hot water for them to wash. At the same time brought a group of villagers were taken to the site to buy those in the pit. Some of them fainted, when they had to bury those who were still calling for help. This group was replaced by another, by 6 AM on the December 22nd they finished burying the massacred victims.

According to reliable information, from the pit in the morning came the living: a man, 40 years old, who headed to Novo Selo, where he caught by the Ustasha, returned and killed; one woman, about 30 years old, emerged from the pit and went to a brook from which flowed human blood, followed it to the Kupa River and after 4 kilometers was captured by the Ustasha in Novo Selo, she was returned and killed. One boy aged 12 years, named Milorad Minic, from Dugo Selo, got out of the pit and headed toward the Kupa River and after a day of wandering and come into Trepca where the Ustasha caught him with a group of villagers, killed him and buried him in Trepci. Before that, he was seen covered in blood with three wounds in his neck. Ilija Bucan, in Prkos, a blacksmith, torn from the bound column, jumped on the Ustasha, but another Ustashe cut his throat.

The Ustasha did their killing in the dark, under the light of lantern. There were no gunshots, so no one could hear what was happening and people did not know where they were going until they came to the pits. The Lasinje locals did not even learn what was going on from their neighbors who were backfilling the pit. On the second day, December 22nd, the second part of the people who had been caught and brought to Lasinja, were forced to dig a pit themselves. The entire Radanovic family, father and mother in the presence of the younger five year old daughter were first forced to dig a pit, and then in order: father, mother, older brother, younger sister and finally the youngest daughter were slain and thrown into the pit.

By the evening December 24th four pits had been dug, where they slaughtered and killed around 1100 souls. On the evening of the 21st of December, one of the Ustasha who was committing the slaughter went through a nervous breakdown and went mad. He was killed by his colleagues and thrown into the pit. Two days before the New Year in 1942, about 60 women with children were driven into Lasinja in two trucks to the village of Dugo. In the hamlet Kljajic local Ustasha war criminal Joseph Pavek, from Desnog Štefanki, organized and personally participated with unloading these women with children shut them up in a in a wooden house onto which he poured petrol and set it on fire. He did the same sort of thing again in 1942. He was captured and convicted by the NOV court and publicly executed in Lasinja.

According to the surviving partisans, an alert was sent to those responsible for the safety of villages. In addition, in one of the meetings, the protection of the population was discussed and some individuals suggested that only men withdraw, and the children and women to stay at home, in areas that were not not occupied but in the event of the arrival of Ustasha all residents were to head towards free territory.

Thus this tragedy for Prkos was committed in this terrible year of 1941, when 478 people from Prkoš were murdered. There were 130 men and 7 women, who managed to escape before the Ustasha massacres, this sad 21st December, during the NOB 23 were killed or died as a PLA fighters, and 6 died of typhus. Among the survivors are 31 honored on “Partisan memorials of 1941. “During NOB were 108 soldiers in PLA. There were 38 volunteers. Their names can be seen in the list of those honored Partisan memorials in 1941.” They are also on the list of dead and deceased veterans.

There could be no FAZ-a formed since all the women, except for seven, were slain by the Ustasha in the Brezje woods on the 21-30 of December. The first youth organization was formed in early August 1941. Among the first young people, members of the organization were: Dušan Bastajic, Ljuban Bastajic, Nikola Bastajic, Mile Bižic, Cedomir Bucan, Secretary, Jovo Bucan, Deputy Secretary, Mile Bucan, Dragan Korac, Adam Roknic, Bozidar Roknic and Vaso Roknic. The Youth organization particularly owed its existance to the efforts of Britvec Marko, a Croat from Crne Drago.
